The original low carb protein blend, USN Pure Protein has been a sector leader for years due to its superb nutritional profile and amazing versatility. Rather than being a plain whey protein based product, it is comprised of a blend of proteins from different sources which provides a supply of amino acids for an extended period of time as well as providing a complete amino profile. Called the STS (Sustained Transport System) protein, each serving provides 40g of protein consisting of whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, calcium caseinate, egg albumen and a highly purified soy isolate. This blend, exclusive to USN, provides a rapid influx of amino acids from the whey and soy components, a moderately slower influx from the egg component and then a long lasting taper from the caseinate. The benefit of this over a straight whey product is that it makes Pure Protein extremely versatile. Whereas straight whey protein is most useful immediately around training due to its fast absorption, the STS blend in Pure Protein is a perfect option at all times of day. Very useful for between meals as a protein snack, as well as with breakfast but it can also be a very effective post workout shake due to its whey component and can even be used just before bed to provide a steady release of amino acids for several hours whilst asleep. Pure Protein is naturally high in BCAA’s and glutamine thanks to the STS blend and each serving provides 9g and 8g respectively but it still doesn’t stop there. Pure Protein also contains the ZymaTech enzyme blend to further enhance the bio-availability and a complete vitamin and mineral blend so it can even be used as a meal replacement for those on restricted carbohydrate diets.

Of course, no review would be complete without a note on the flavouring, and this is an area in which USN excel. I have yet to use a USN product I did not think was superbly flavoured, but Pure Protein is undoubtedly one of the best flavoured products in the sports nutrition category. For this review I used the chocolate cream variant and the taste is mellow and not overly sweet yet pleasantly rich with a lingering chocolate taste and aroma. It mixes into a smooth shake on the slightly thicker side in a matter of seconds with no clumps and has a very creamy mouth feel. This is definitely a protein shake that is a pleasure to drink.

All in all, Pure Protein IGF-1 represents a top notch entry into the protein supplement market as the consumer gets a superb nutritional profile along with a great taste at a price that is excellent value for money. Jeff Baillie
